Day One — San Diego Waterfront

The Waterfront

Day One

Where San Diego Comes Alive

Day 1 is my personal favorite. San Diego's waterfront packs more in a single walkable stretch than most cities manage in an entire trip — an aircraft carrier museum, the world-class gardens of Balboa Park, the cobblestone streets of Little Italy, and a farmers market that locals guard like a secret. I'll tell you about the Go City SD Pass that saves real money, and the parking move that makes it all stress-free.

Little Italy San Diego — neighborhood streets and dining
San Diego's Best Neighborhood
Little Italy
San Diego's most vibrant neighborhood is the anchor of your entire Day 1. Cobblestone streets, world-class restaurants, rooftop bars, and the Piazza della Famiglia — an open-air dining plaza at 523 W. Date St. that buzzes from morning to midnight. On Saturdays, the Mercato Farmers Market takes over the surrounding blocks from 8am–2pm. Start here, end here.
Parking
Smart & Final lot at 1900 India St — free on weekends. Street parking on Fir St also works well.

Bayfront Walk — San Diego waterfront promenade
Waterfront Walk
Bayfront Walk
After brunch in Little Italy, let the waterfront pull you south. There's no agenda here — just a wide promenade, bay breezes, and one of the most effortlessly beautiful stretches of coastline in Southern California. You'll drift past the tall ships of the Maritime Museum, catch the massive silhouette of the USS Midway rising above the harbor, and eventually find yourself wandering the waterside shops and carousel at Seaport Village. It's the kind of walk where an hour slips away without you noticing — and you won't mind at all.
Parking
Park in Little Italy — the Smart & Final lot at 1900 India St is free on weekends, and street parking on Fir St works well too. The bayfront is just a few blocks downhill, making it a natural starting point for the walk.

USS Midway Museum — aircraft carrier docked at Navy Pier San Diego
Waterfront Walk
USS Midway Museum
Walk the flight deck of a real WWII aircraft carrier — one of the most awe-inspiring things you can do in San Diego. Dozens of restored planes sit right on the surface of the ship, and below deck you can explore the massive interior on a self-guided walking tour through crew quarters, the engine room, and the bridge. It's the kind of experience that genuinely stops you in your tracks. Also covered by the Go City San Diego Pass if you're hitting multiple attractions.
Parking
Navy Pier lot at 910 N Harbor Dr — paid lot steps from the ship.

Seaport Village and Embarcadero — San Diego waterfront
Waterfront Walk
Seaport Village
A local favorite right on the waterfront — Seaport Village is a charming open-air shopping and dining district with over 50 restaurants, cafes, and shops spread along the bay. It's the kind of place where you slow down, grab a bite, and just enjoy the view. And what a view it is — this is one of the best spots on the waterfront to take in the iconic Coronado Bridge stretching across the bay. Stroll the waterside paths, browse the boutiques, and let the afternoon drift by. Locals love it for a reason.
Parking
Embarcadero Marina lot — easy walk to Seaport Village, the Midway, and the ferry.

Day 1 Local Tips

Buy the Go City Pass First

Before you spend a dime on any attraction, get the Go City San Diego Explorer Pass at gocity.com/san-diego. It covers Midway, the Zoo, Birch Aquarium, and 25+ more. Buy it the night before your Day 1.

Balboa Park Botanical Building

Free to enter and one of the most stunning spaces in the city. The lily pond out front is one of San Diego's most photographed spots. Go early morning for the best light and the fewest crowds.

Saturday Mercato = Non-Negotiable

If your Day 1 falls on a Saturday, start at the Little Italy Mercato Farmers Market (523 W. Date St., 8am–2pm). It's the best morning in the city. Budget $20 for snacks and you will not regret it.

End the Day in Little Italy

Little Italy is walkable, charming, and has the best restaurant density in San Diego. Dinner at Ironside Fish & Oyster or a craft beer at The Ballast Point Tasting Room — either way, you win.

While You're Here

Harbor Island — San Diego marina and bay views
Waterfront Walk
Harbor Island
One of the best spots in San Diego for a panoramic view — you get the full Downtown skyline on one side and Coronado Island and North Island Naval Air Station on the other. Walk the waterfront path, grab a bench under the trees, and watch the planes land and sailboats drift by.
Rady Shell at Jacobs Park — outdoor amphitheater
Waterfront Walk
The Rady Shell
San Diego's stunning outdoor amphitheater on the bay. Free to walk the grounds during the day — performances require tickets and are available throughout the year, so it's worth checking the schedule before your visit. A beautiful spot for photos, especially in the morning light.
